Citigroup to scale up its green spending
The Financial Times, 8 May 2007
By David Wighton
Citigroup will on Tuesday commit to providing $50bn (?25bn) to
environmental projects during the next decade in Wall Street’s boldest
statement of the business risks and opportunities presented by climate
change.
The world’s largest financial services group will commit to increase
10-fold to $10bn its planned investment to reduce its own greenhouse gas
emissions.
It has also begun to advise borrowers about how to make their projects more
environmentally sustainable to reduce their risk from future environmental
regulation.
Citigroup’s initiative comes as Wall Street scrambles to capitalise on
opportunities in areas such as alternative energy, energy efficiency and
carbon emissions trading.
Bank of America recently announced a $20bn initiative to support growth of
environmentally sustainable business activity. Lehman Brothers has set up a
climate change council headed by a senior banker, Theodore Roosevelt IV, to
lead its effort to address challenges of global warming.
Citigroup will also warn of the difficulties companies face because of
uncertainty about future environmental regulations.
Chuck Prince, chief executive, will call for global and US frameworks for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions “to bring certainty to the markets and
achieve a level playing field”.
Citigroup was one of the banks that led development of the Equator
Principles, a voluntary set of guidelines for assessing the environmental
and social impact of projects. It has extended that approach to provide
risk assessments to clients in greenhouse gas-intensive sectors.
As part of the group-wide plan, Citigroup’s markets and banking group
expects to invest in and to finance more than $30bn in clean energy and
alternative technology during the next 10 years, with current commitments
already approaching $7.5bn.
